Get the lowdown on group travel insurance

If you’re travelling as a group, one travel insurance policy can cover each and every one of you and for a lot less than getting individual policies.

Whether you are off to travelling as part of a wedding party or jetting away on a stag do,it’s good to get your travel insurance cover done and dusted, so you can start planning the more fun factors of your trip.

Similar to couples and family cover, groups travelling together can take out a policy that covers everyone in their party, preventing the need for individual cover, which can save a lot of time and hassle.

Besides price, it can be convenient to have the whole group on one policy, you’ll spend less time on insurance, you’ll understand the benefits easier, and you’ll have a central contact point if you do end up having to make a claim.

How does group travel insurance work?

Group travel insurance is just like individual travel insurance, except it's designed for multiple people all travelling together on one policy. A group could consist of a couple of friends traveling or an entire football team.

Like other types of travel insurance, your policy will cover everyone under it in the event of a medical emergency, a cancellation or a loss of luggage and many more things (check our policy wording). It’s designed for a mix of people who despite living at different addresses, plan on embarking on the same adventure.

Group travel insurance is a great option for groups of friends, sports clubs or work colleagues who are holidaying together. And, if you intend to travel with the same group more than twice a year, you can even get a group travel insurance annual policy. Otherwise a single cover policy is just fine.

Helpful tip: No one likes being left out so bear in mind that the maximum number of people who can share a policy can vary between insurers.

Why do I need travel insurance for a group?

As the saying goes, there is safety in numbers. However, when you think about it, the more people involved in booking and going on holiday, the more you up the ante for things to potentially go wrong, i.e. someone falling ill. So much for sayings eh?

There is also an increased probability of someone on the trip losing their luggage or needing to go home early. Group travel cover is an easy way to keep everyone safe and happy, even if they don’t always get along.

With group travel insurance, everyone will have access to a 24/7 phone line in the event of a medical emergency and the cover also includes repatriation costs.

If you are travelling as a family and all live at the same address, then family travel insurance might be a better option. Likewise, if you are a couple who don’t live together, you might want to weigh up the cost of a group policy compared to taking out individual insurance or special couples insurance.

What group insurance won’t cover.

Like most standard travel insurance policies, your group policy will not cover any alcohol or drug related illnesses whilst you’re away. The same applies should someone on the policy fall ill due to a pre-existing health condition which has not been declared.

Depending on the nature of your trip, you may need to purchase some add-on insurance if you are taking part in extreme sports such as skiing. Likewise, your policy might not automatically cover adventurous excursions such as rock climbing, so it's best to check your policy details to be certain.
Group policies can come with upper age limits so double check this first to make sure everyone you want to be included on the policy is eligible. loveit coverit group travel insurance covers travellers up to 60 years old.

The premise of group travel insurance is to protect those who are travelling together, so anyone within the policy who is travelling separately via a different airport, may find they will not be covered. Remember too that the policy is designed for those departing from the UK and returning again.
