Greece Wildfire

Due to the ongoing wildfires in Greece, you may be experiencing disruption to your travel plans. Rhodes and Corfu are currently the worst affected. For the latest travel advice in Greece, please visit the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) website.

AXA underwrites numerous travel insurance products in the UK and globally, so within each salesjourney there will be messaging about what is covered and what is not. The below Frequently Asked Questions provide general advice and are not a guarantee of cover. For further details
about coverage, please check your policy wording.

Am I covered if I decide not to travel?

Under your travel insurance policy, there is no cover if you decide not to travel to an area not impacted by the wildfires, such as another Greek Island. If you are due to travel to an affected area, but wish to cancel your trip, your cover will depend on how you booked your trip and the cover you hold.

Package trip

If your package provider has cancelled your booking, please speak to your tour operator to postpone the trip or arrange a refund. If you change your trip dates or destination and have purchased a Single Trip policy, please contact the issuer of your policy to update your trip details. Contact details can be located within your policy wording.

Independently booked trip

If you are unable to use your booked accommodation due to fire, please contact your hotel provider to see if you can postpone or cancel the trip in the first instance. If the hotel provider can’t do either, you may be covered under your travel insurance policy. Cover will depend on the type of policy you hold. Please check the Cancellation or Travel Disruption sections of your policy for further details.

Flight only booking

If your flight is cancelled due to the fires, you are entitled to a full refund through EU passenger rights.

Am I covered to cut short my trip and return home?

Under your travel insurance policy, there is no cover if you decide to return home early from an area that is not impacted by the wildfires, such as another Greek Island. If you’re in an affected area, you should follow the advice of the local authorities. If you need to return home early from your trip, your cover will depend on how you booked your trip and the cover you hold.

Package trip

If you are on package trip and have had to leave your accommodation due to the wildfires or wish to return home, please speak to your tour operator.

Independently booked trip

If you have booked independently (flights, accommodation separately) and are unable to use your pre-booked accommodation or have been evacuated from the area you were staying, cover will depend on the type of policy you hold. Please check the Cutting Short Your Trip, Curtailment or Travel Disruption sections of your policy for further details.

Will I be covered for any medical expenses?

Your travel insurance policy will cover medical expenses whilst overseas, providing you have an accurate medical screening in place and you’re not travelling against the advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Will I be covered if I need to move accommodation due to fires?

If you’re in an affected area, you should follow the advice of the local authorities. If you need to move to an alternative accommodation due to the fire, your cover will depend on how you booked your trip and the cover you hold.

Package trip

If you are on package trip and have had to leave your accommodation due to the wildfires, please speak to your tour operator who will provide alternative accommodation.

Independently booked trip
