As autumn approaches, the tech world is buzzing with anticipation for Apple’s next big iPhone release. The iPhone 16 series is poised to make its debut, and if the rumour mill is to be believed, we’re in for some exciting upgrades. Let’s dive into what might be in store for Apple enthusiasts come September.
Mark your calendars, we’re expecting Apple to unveil the iPhone 16 lineup in early to mid-September, pre-orders should kick off the same week, with the phones hitting stores the following Friday.
As for pricing, here’s what we’re hearing:
These prices are speculative, of course, and it remains to be seen whether Apple will adjust them to account for production costs and lure in those concerned about the cost of living who are also avid iPhone fans.
Get ready for some serious screen real estate on the Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro is rumoured to sport a 6.3-inch display (up from 6.1 inches), while the Pro Max could boast a huge 6.9-inch screen (up from 6.7 inches). The standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are expected to maintain their 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively.
We’re also hearing whispers about thinner bezels, thanks to new border structure technology. The Pro models might dazzle with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits, courtesy of micro-lens technology that could also improve power efficiency.
Colour-wise, the Pro models might come in black, white, silver/grey, and a new rose colour (possibly with a bronze hue). The non-Pro models could offer a rainbow of seven options: yellow, blue, green, black, pink, white, and purple.
One of the most intriguing rumours is the addition of a ‘Capture Button’ across all models. This nifty feature could allow users to swipe for zoom, lightly press to focus, and hard press to capture photos or videos. It’s expected to be located under the power key on the right edge.
The Action Button, which debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro models, is set to replace the mute switch across the entire iPhone 16 range, with improved functionality to boot.
The Pro models are expected to pack the new A18 Pro chipset, promising significant power boosts and support for AI features. The non-Pro models might either get the A18 or inherit the A17 Pro from last year’s lineup.
Connectivity-wise, the Pro models could support Wi-Fi 7, while the non-Pro variants might upgrade to Wi-Fi 6E.
Battery life has always been a hot topic, and Apple might be addressing this with stacked battery technology. This could mean longer battery life and faster charging, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max potentially boasting the longest battery life of any iPhone to date.
AI Features Apple seems to be going all-in on AI with the iPhone 16. We might see system-wide writing tools for rewriting, proofreading, and summarising text, an ‘Image Playground’ for generating images from text prompts, and ‘Photo Movie Memories’ that create narrative arcs using AI.
Siri could also get a significant upgrade, with improved context understanding and conversational abilities. It’s worth noting that some of these AI features might not be available until the iOS 18.1 update in October, and they may initially launch primarily in the US.
Photography enthusiasts, listen up! The Pro models are set for some serious camera upgrades. The iPhone 16 Pro might feature a 12MP 5x optical zoom and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. The Pro Max could go even further with a potential super telephoto lens offering 10x zoom.
The non-Pro models, however, aren’t expected to see significant camera improvements this time around.
Other Rumoured Features Apple might be addressing overheating issues with a new graphene thermal system. There’s also talk of a vertical camera array for the base models to assist with spatial videos.
While we always advise taking rumours with a pinch of salt, the iPhone 16 series is shaping up to be an exciting release. From larger screens and improved cameras to advanced AI capabilities and a new chipset, Apple seems ready to push the boundaries once again.
Remember, none of this is confirmed until Tim Cook takes the stage in September. But one thing’s for certain – the next generation of iPhones is bound to make waves in the tech world. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the big reveal!
